Before answering the question whether curtains can be hung on walls, it must be remembered that:

  • Their position is determined necessarily with the help of a level.
  • With imperfect plastering of the wall (see Applying Stucco to a Wall: Video Lesson), or if there is a concrete lintel above the window, the cornice must be fixed on a wooden lath installed in advance above the window opening.
  • To attach the console to a wall or ceiling, the accessories provided should be used, screws and dowels must also be included.

  • When attaching the rod, the distance from it to the wall should be about ten centimeters, and the length of its protruding parts - up to 20 centimeters.
  • The brackets should be mounted from the ends of the bar at a distance of three centimeters, this will allow you to freely put on it special rings for curtains.

What types of curtain rods are used for curtains

Which fixing of the Roman curtains to the wall to choose depends on several factors.

Among them:

  • Material for making curtains.
  • Their external configuration.
  • The method of fixing the cornice.

For the manufacture of cornice can be used:

  • Wood.
  • Metal.
  • Plastic.

Cornices according to the manufacturing method are:

  • Stringed. Such models are not very convenient to use during operation. A metal string is the basis of a cornice; it is not used in wet rooms. Otherwise, the metal must be coated with a special coating that is resistant to prolonged exposure to steam and water.
  • Baguette. These are more practical and quite convenient when installing designs.

Cornices can be:

  • Single-row, to accommodate only one row of decorative elements for the window.
  • Double-row, for attaching curtains and curtains.
  • Three-row, for the location of several types of curtains, curtains.

Depending on the shape of the premises, manufacturers offer consumers products of various shapes:

  • Round.
  • Telescopic.
  • Embossed.
  • Profile.
  • Special designed for fixing blinds or roman blinds.
  • Baguette.

Some of the designs have installation features, but basically all devices are mounted almost identically.

Features of fixing cornices

Before doing the work yourself, you must purchase:

  • A stepladder or ladder with increased stability and providing comfortable access to the places of fastening of curtains.
  • Electric drill or hammer, depending on the type of wall.
  • Drills of the required diameter, their dimensions are determined by fixing dowels.
  • Quality roulette.
  • A simple pencil.
  • Level to check the horizontal during the work.
  • Fixing dowels, self-tapping screws.

Tip: To ensure reliable fixing of the cornice and planning to hang rather heavy curtains, you should additionally use liquid nails or a special epoxy resin, which is added to the hole before installing the dowel in it. After complete solidification, a reliable and durable grip capable of withstanding a significant load is obtained.

The general procedure for installing the cornice offers:

  • Mark up.
  • Check the possibility of free opening the window after installing the cornice.
  • If it will impede the movement of the window frame, you will need to consider using another model of decorative element.
  • In order for the curtain hanging on the cornice to look harmonious, you need to ensure that it is not touching the windowsill, but is located next to it.
  • The size of the brackets fixed to the wall should be larger than the protruding part of the window sill.
  • The location of the curtains in relation to the windowsill is checked by a plumb line.
  • The length of the cornice is selected depending on the size of the window opening. On both sides of the window, it should protrude at the same distance, which will save the existing room geometry, and if necessary, align it somewhat.
  • If curtain rods are from wall to wall, the dimensions of the opening for the window do not matter. This is the most harmonious arrangement of the decorative element when the window is located in the middle of the wall or if it occupies most of it.

  • 2 - connection of wall and plastic brackets with screws between each other.
  • 3 - fixing the cornice tires on the brackets.

Tip: If the length of the plank is more than two meters, it is imperative to install middle fasteners, which will allow the curtains to hang in the future not to sag and avoid damage to the cornice. For the installation of curtains, it is advisable to use removable slats, this will allow not to remove the entire structure as a whole.

After marking and preliminary fitting for the free opening of the window frame, it is necessary:

  • Drill the first hole.
  • Pre-hang the cornice.
  • Level check the marking for the second mounting hole.
  • The bar is removed and a hole is drilled.
  • Driving in dowels, pre-applied with a small layer of epoxy.
  • The cornice brackets are attached to the screws.
  • All rings are put on for hanging curtains.
  • A bracket is threaded into the mounting rings of the bracket.
  • Decorative ornaments are hung at the ends of the plank, additionally fixing the planks in place.
  • Curtains are hung.
  • Hooks for curtains are placed in the wall, which ensure that the curtains are held in assembled condition.

How to fix eaves for the Roman curtains

Roman curtains are a window accessory specially created for lovers of laconicism and simplicity. After the products are purchased, you can fix them in several ways. One of them is shown in the photo.

Cornices for Roman curtains can be:

  • A special mini-cornice, which is designed to fix the curtain in the window opening directly to the window frame. This is the most optimal version of the eaves for the classic version of the Roman curtains. Fixing the canvas on the window frame allows you to save space, in this case, the window sill remains completely free.
  • Classic curtain rods for roller blinds are used for fastening paintings that have standard sizes. This design is mounted directly on the wall above the window opening. When using such a cornice fastening, it is possible to organize a single space in the room, dropping only the Roman curtain, while it will be located on the same level with the main wall.

The order of installation of the cornice:

  • As a rule, a special curtain rod is included:
  1. with the Roman curtain itself;
  2. with all the components necessary for installation: self-tapping screws, screws and other elements;
  3. special instructions, which step by step describes the entire installation process of the device.

If there are no instructions in the kit on how to fix the cornices correctly and how to fix the curtain hooks to the wall, you can use the step-by-step recommendations presented in the video in this article. Regardless of the type of cornice, the entire installation process is performed similarly.

Its order is as follows:

  • Marked mounting points for the cornice. The marking is carried out so that the panel of the Roman curtain protrudes a few centimeters beyond the edges of the window or its opening, which depends on the installation location of the curtain.
  • To install special cornice brackets, holes are drilled in the wall with an electric drill. The self-tapping screws included in the package of the Roman curtains are used to directly mount these parts to the wall or window frame.
  • The presence of a special weight bar is checked at the lower edge of the curtain. Sometimes it goes separately from the sets of the main curtain canvas. If it is available, you need to attach the Velcro located on the upper edge of the canvas of the Roman curtain to the special tape on the ledge and press it firmly enough.
  • The process of opening and closing the curtains is tested, how smoothly the folds fit on the canvas.

Cornices for fastening Roman curtains are used, as a rule, if the window accessory is fixed on the outer edge of the window opening, and not on the window frame using special Velcro, which does not require the use of special improvised tools.

Some recommendations when installing the cornice:

  • Regardless of the method of installation of the cornice, the Roman curtain should not interfere with the free movement of the window frame when opening and closing the window.
  • With automatic control, Roman blinds are attached only on the outside of the window opening. For fixing to the frame, this mechanism will be very bulky and absolutely not convenient.
  • If the window has a narrow window sill, the cornice mount for these curtains should be placed only above the window opening, but not inside it.

Despite the fact that the price of Roman curtains is quite high, they are a universal element of window opening decor, emphasizing the interior style of the room, hiding the minor imperfections of the window opening and the window as a whole.
